Chapter Twenty-Eight

When I came back from the vision, I wasn’t standing amid a burst of energy as I’d expected. Nor was I lying on my back on the cavern floor. Instead, I was tucked into the blankets on my bed in Vir’s temple.

And Vir himself was resting against the stone wall above the bed, his eyes closed, breathing gently. I frowned at that. It still didn’t make sense to me that gods slept. They weren’t mortal; they didn’t suffer from the same maladies as humans. Yet Vir slept every other night or so. Said it was “the way the body recharges.” Even if he required a different kind of charge, he still needed to refuel.

I’d likened it to an electric vehicle versus a combustion engine, and he’d said yes, the same principle. I hadn’t bothered to tell him which of us I thought was which. He wouldn’t have liked the answer.

Regardless, I’d always found it, well, cute, to see him sleeping.

Lying there in silence, I watched his face for quite some time as he slept, not saying anything, not moving, barely even thinking. At that moment, everything was peaceful and perfect, and I wanted it to go on forever. Though, I knew it couldn’t.

You’ve been such a boon to me, Vir. No, not just to me, to our entire group. I wish I could tell you just how much you mean to all of us. I know the guys thank you, with their head nods and slaps on the shoulder every time you pull one of them out of a tough spot in a fight. But you deserve more than that.

“You’ve been so good to me,” I murmured, watching his eyelids twitch as he slept, his breathing deep and rhythmic. “So kind. So caring. You’ve watched over me when I needed it, and you’ve never pushed me about us and our Soulbond. You’ve always let me do what I needed to do.”

You always seem to know what to do. When to hold back and let me decide, or when to take my decision and be bold with it.

I remembered the feeling of being lifted and held against the wall, his mouth over mine, stealing my breath. Yes, Vir certainly knew how to be bold and assertive when the time was right. But he always waited for me to make the right move.

Nothing had happened between us since that moment. We’d been too busy training, unlocking my powers, and teaching me how to control them. There had been no time for us to spend together, alone, away from prying eyes. There would be time for that later. After we saved the world.

I hope.

My lips burned with the memory of his touch. Yes, I definitely wanted more time with him.

Is it me thinking that or the Soulbond?

Even as I considered it, it pulsed hard, urging me toward him. To let him in. Let him take me and unify our bond.

In some deep, secret part of me that I kept shut away from the world, never allowing to see the light of day, I let myself admit that I wanted him.
